My Top 5 Golf Destinations for Gals in 2024
Destination 1: Kiawah Island Golf Resort, South Carolina
Overall Experience:
Kiawah Island merges stunning natural beauty with excellent golfing facilities. The property is gorgeous, set against miles of pristine beach perfect for long walks. While the golf courses, especially Oak Point, are in immaculate condition and forgiving for players of all levels, the overall service could improve to match the resort's high standards. The accommodations and exterior of the buildings, though spacious and with spectacular views, show signs of wear and could use some updating.
Pros:
-
Outstanding dining options with a great variety of choices.
-
Impeccable condition of the golf courses.
-
Beautiful oceanfront views and extensive beach areas.
Cons:
-
General service not up to the expected standard.
-
Accommodations and facilities need refurbishing.
-
Limited internet connectivity in some villas.
Destination 2: Pebble Beach Golf LinksResort, California
Overall Experience:
Playing at Pebble Beach was a bucket-list experience that surpassed my expectations. The course is nothing short of heavenly, with each hole from the 4th onwards offering breathtaking views and unique challenges. In July last year, the resort hosted the 79th US Women’s Open Championship, showcasing its ability to meet the high demands of a major tournament while extending its world-class hospitality. The service was exemplary, and staying at the inn provided convenient access to all resort amenities. Opting to walk the course without a caddy allowed for a more personal and relaxed round, appreciating the course's history and beauty at my own pace.
Pros:
-
Unparalleled scenery and course layout, with iconic holes like the 18th.
-
High-quality service and proven capability to host major golf events.
-
Opting to walk the course provides a fuller appreciation of its beauty.
Cons:
-
Can feel crowded, especially during peak times and major events.
-
Some holes, particularly after the 10th, might feel less inspiring compared to the earlier ones.
Destination 3: Sea Island Resort, Georgia
Overall Experience:
My stay at Sea Island Resort was a real treat. The resort's gorgeous Spanish-style buildings and marshland setting created a perfect backdrop for a luxurious getaway. My room had a stunning river view, ideal for enjoying quiet mornings. The dining experiences were top-notch, offering delicious meals with beautiful views. The golf was fantastic too. Playing on the PGA Seaside Course and the other well-maintained courses like Plantation and Retreat felt special, with each round made better by helpful forecaddies. It’s a place that makes you feel both relaxed and pampered.
Pros-
The staff were incredibly attentive, making me feel welcome and valued from start to finish.
-
Between the gourmet meals, relaxing spa treatments, and challenging golf courses, there was always something wonderful to do.
Cons:
-
Some of the resort’s best features are only available if you’re staying as a guest or are a club member.
-
The level of luxury here doesn’t come cheap, but it’s worth it for such a high-quality experience.
Destination 4: Gleneagles Golf Resort, Scotland
"If Heaven is as good as this, I sure hope they have some tee times left."
LEE TREVINO
Overall Experience:
My recent visit to Gleneagles Golf Resort was truly memorable, living up to its reputation with stunning scenery and top-notch facilities. I had the pleasure of playing both the Queen's and King's courses last week, thankfully dodging most of the rain. The courses were in perfect condition, with every hole offering scenic views and some quite challenging plays. The Queen's course was particularly pristine, complete with breathtaking landscapes and well-maintained roughs.
However, my experience on the King's course was marred by slow play and poor marshaling which disrupted the game's flow, despite the beauty of the course. On account of its charming and reputable location, Gleneagles is set to host the popular Ladies Open tournament in May 2024, drawing the likes of professional women golfers such as Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu.
Pros:
-
Both courses are surrounded by stunning landscapes, enhancing the playing experience.
-
The fairways, greens, and bunkers are meticulously kept, with fine soft sand in the bunkers making for a superior golfing experience.
Cons:
-
Encountered significant delays, particularly on the King's course, due to slow groups and ineffective marshaling.
-
The enjoyment was further diminished by the pressure from other players and inadequate management of the course traffic.
Golfing and Accommodations:
The halfway house provided a welcome break with good facilities at the 11th tee. Beyond golf, the hotel itself is splendid, echoing an old-world charm that feels both luxurious and welcoming. Dining at the Glen Eagles Dining Room was an experience in itself, with delicious offerings like Norwegian Lake Trout and Scotland's finest roast beef, paired wonderfully with white German wine.
Playing at Gleneagles was a check off my bucket list and despite some issues, it remains one of the best courses I've played, with friendly and helpful staff in the shop and on the courses. I eagerly look forward to another round on these beautiful courses, especially during the excitement of the upcoming Ladies Open.
Destination 5: FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club & Resort, Vietnam
Overall Experience:
My stay at FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club & Resort was a blend of modern luxury and minor inconveniences. The resort stands out with its excellent facilities and breathtaking location atop a hill offering a 180-degree view of Ha Long Bay. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the resort's overall ambiance was enhanced by its contemporary design and attentive service. The golf club provided a challenging yet rewarding experience, with stunning views from the 8th hole onwards that made every round memorable.
Pros:
-
Situated on a hill, the resort offers unique panoramic views of Ha Long Bay.
-
From a heated indoor pool to a well-equipped gym, the facilities cater well to relaxation and fitness needs.
-
The staff, particularly at reception, were remarkably helpful, going beyond their duties to assist with any issues.
Cons:
-
Checking in was slow due to the security deposit requirement, and the lack of pool attendants in winter made for minor inconveniences.
-
The breakfast spread was underwhelming with no live egg station and lukewarm coffee.
Golfing Experience:
The golf course at FLC Ha Long Bay is both beautiful and challenging, with many elevation changes that test your skills. The layout is thoughtfully designed, providing excellent service throughout. However, it's advisable to bring extra balls as some holes can be quite demanding.
The combination of the resort's luxurious setting, attentive service, and challenging golf course creates a compelling reason to visit, despite the few areas that could use improvement. My gratitude goes out to the staff for their exceptional support during my stay, making it a memorable part of my travels in Vietnam.
As I reflect on my golfing adventures—from the serene landscapes of Kiawah Island to the historic links at Gleneagles, and the stunning vistas of Ha Long Bay—it's clear each resort offered something truly special. Despite a few hiccups like slow play or breakfast letdowns, the experiences were overwhelmingly positive. These trips were more than just about golf; they were about soaking in luxury, enjoying breathtaking scenery, and making unforgettable memories on and off the greens.
